Why the writing exists

Deck quality is unusually hard to shop for. The parts that decide whether a deck lasts twenty years are buried within a week of starting: footings under backfill, a ledger behind flashing and siding, joists under boards. What is left visible is the surface, and the surface is the cheapest part of the job. Two builders can quote the same footprint six thousand dollars apart and a homeowner has no way to see which difference is real.

So we wrote down the things that are checkable. Why ground that freezes moves whatever sits on it, and what a footing has to reach past. How a ledger is fastened, and what nailing one to sheathing does instead. Why the height of the back door quietly decides whether the deck has a guard around it. Why an old frame usually cannot take composite as a straight swap. And what a high desert summer does to cedar in three years.

How it works

1. Send the details. Call or use the form. Rough size, where the door is, which way the yard faces, a budget band if you have one. Five minutes.
2. A deck builder calls you. We hand the project to a local builder working your part of the valley, and that builder is the one who phones.
3. Site measure and a written price. They walk the yard, check the grade and the rim joist, and follow up with a quote split across footings, framing, decking, rail, and stairs.
4. Read it with our numbers beside it. Our guides give you Idaho figures to compare against. Take as long as you want with the decision.

Who tends to get in touch

• First deck on a newer house. The most common project in Meridian by a wide margin. A builder left a slider onto grass, and a decade later the household finally does something about it.
• Second deck on a 2000s subdivision house. Bear Creek, Baldwin Park, Lochsa Falls and the rest of that wave are twenty years in, and their first decks are at the end of their surface life.
• Shade problems. A west-facing back yard in a valley that runs a July normal high near 93 degrees, and a deck nobody uses after two in the afternoon.
• Something that feels wrong. A rail that moves when leaned on, a stair that has racked, a deck that has started to pull away from the house. These get looked at rather than quoted from photos.

What a well-run deck project looks like

• A written price, broken into parts. Footings, framing, decking, rail, stairs. Five lines rather than one number, so two bids can be compared.
• A ledger done properly. Bolted or lag screwed through to house framing with corrosion resistant flashing over the top, or a deck framed to stand free of the wall where the construction behind the siding is not a known quantity.
• Footings that reach. Bearing on undisturbed soil below the frost line, with depth and bearing checked in the open hole before concrete goes in.
• Registered and insured as a matter of course. Established builders here carry both, and a professional quote reflects it.
