What goes on it

Sizing from the furniture rather than from a number is how most people end up with a deck they use. The layout guide works it through.

What each setting is doing

What goes on the deck and what it is surfaced in set the base. Height then changes almost everything else at once, and it is the most underestimated driver on the whole form: longer posts, larger footings, a guard right round the open edge, and a stair that stops being a step and becomes a flight with a handrail and footings of its own. That is five lines moving together rather than one.

Rail is priced by perimeter, which is why a long thin deck costs more to rail than a square one holding the same furniture. Cover is priced separately again, and the tie-in to an existing roof is the part that varies most between houses, because nobody knows how the existing roof is framed until they are up there.

Installed deck cost per square foot by decking material Four horizontal bars. Pressure treated pine runs $32 to $48 installed, western red cedar $42 to $66, capped composite $55 to $88, and capped PVC $66 to $105. Installed cost, complete deck, before rail and stairs $0 $30 $60 $90 $120 Pressure treated pine $32 to $48 Western red cedar $42 to $66 Capped composite $55 to $88 Capped PVC $66 to $105 Treasure Valley market estimate, 2026. Per square foot of deck surface.
Base installed cost per square foot before rail, stairs, or cover. The framing beneath all four is identical, which is why the material premium applies to less of the job than the board price suggests.

The full cost guide works through each line with worked examples, and the size and layout guide covers how to pick a footprint that suits the yard before you price anything.
