Deck building across the Treasure Valley

Meridian is home base. From there the working radius covers all of Ada County and the eastern half of Canyon County, which is about half an hour in any direction. The terrain, the housing age, and the lot sizes change as you move across the valley, and so does what a deck project involves.

Two counties, one building code

Idaho adopted the 2018 International Residential Code statewide, effective January 2021, so the framing rules are identical whether a deck goes up in Meridian, Nampa, or Star. What changes at the county and city line is procedural: which counter takes the application, what the fee schedule looks like, and how quickly an inspector can get out.

The one physical variable worth knowing is elevation. Meridian, Kuna, and Star sit on flat valley floor. Boise and Eagle climb into the foothills, and a sloped lot turns a simple deck into an elevated structure with taller posts, bigger footings, a full guard, and a longer stair run. That difference is worth 30 to 60 percent on the same square footage.
