Deck footings and frost depth

Footings are the part of a deck nobody sees, nobody photographs, and nobody can check again after the first week. They are also the part that decides whether the deck is still level in fifteen years.

Every deck stands on some number of concrete footings, and the depth of those footings is not a preference. It is set by a physical process. Water in soil expands when it freezes, so ground above the frost line swells upward through the winter. Anything bearing on that ground goes up with it, and comes back down somewhere slightly different in the spring. Repeat annually for fifteen winters and a deck that started level has a fall you can see from the kitchen window.

  1. 1 The layer that freezes. Soil holds water. Water expands as it freezes, so the upper ground swells through the winter and settles back in the spring. The depth this reaches is a property of the climate, not of the yard.
  2. 2 Bearing that stops inside it. A block sitting on or near the surface has nothing beneath it but ground in motion. It rises and falls with the season, and it does not come back to exactly where it started.
  3. 3 What the structure does about it. Nothing, and that is the problem. One corner lifts, the far corner does not, and the frame takes the difference. Repeat that every winter and a level deck acquires a fall, doors bind, and boards open up at the joints.
  4. 4 A footing carried past it. The base rests on original ground that stays put all winter, so the seasonal movement happens around the concrete rather than under it. The soil can still grip the sides, which is why this is a question about the bottom of the hole rather than the top.

The two conditions

A footing has to reach below the frost line, and it has to land on undisturbed soil. Whichever of those is deeper is the one that governs, and on a Meridian lot it is genuinely not predictable which one that will be.

Undisturbed soil means original ground. Not fill brought in or pushed around while the house was being framed, which is exactly what the top of a newer subdivision yard often is. Fill compacts and settles under load on its own schedule, independently of anything the weather does, so a footing bearing on it has two separate problems rather than one.

Below the frost line means below the depth the freeze reaches in this climate. That depth is a property of the valley, not of your yard, and it is why deck footings here are a real excavation rather than a hole scraped out with a shovel.

The frost line here is a real one

The Treasure Valley reads as mild because the summers are so dominant, but it is a cold semi-arid climate with a genuine freezing season. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Boise put the January average low near 25 degrees Fahrenheit. That is a valley that freezes properly and thaws properly, every year, which is the exact cycle that moves ground.

It also means the freeze is not uniform across one back yard. The strip along a south-facing wall, the shaded corner behind a fence, and the open middle of the lawn do not all behave the same way, which is why heave shows up as a twist rather than an even settlement.

What a footing is

A poured concrete pier, with its base bearing on original ground at depth and a galvanized or stainless connector on top of it that holds the post clear of the concrete. That connector is not cosmetic. A wood post set directly into soil or cast into concrete sits in the one place on the whole structure where moisture has nowhere to go, and it is the classic reason a deck built otherwise correctly fails from the ground up.

How many footings there are comes out of the beam and the load path rather than out of a rule of thumb. A quote that names a count, a size and a depth is describing a design. One that says "footings" is describing an intention.

The open hole is the only chance to see it

Once concrete is in, nothing about the excavation is visible or verifiable again. Not the depth, not what the bottom landed on, not whether the sides were clean. The window is the few hours between digging and pouring, and it does not reopen.

That is the whole reason footings get the attention they do on a page like this. Every other part of a deck announces its own problems eventually: a loose rail feels loose, a cupped board looks cupped, a failing finish is obvious across the yard. A footing that stopped short says nothing at all until the structure it holds starts leaning, and by then the evidence is under a cubic yard of concrete.

Stair stringers, the detail that catches people

Stair stringers bear on their own footings, below the frost line, on solid ground, exactly as the deck posts do. What they must not do is land on an existing concrete patio or pad, which was almost certainly poured on the surface.

A patio slab in this valley moves seasonally, because it is a slab sitting in the layer that moves. Fix the bottom of a stair flight to something that rises and falls and fix the top of it to a deck that does not, and the flight racks between them. The risers stop being uniform, which is a genuine trip hazard on a stair used in the dark, and the handrail geometry follows the risers.

Where a stair has to land on an existing patio, the answer is breaking through the slab and placing a footing under the bearing point, not fastening a bracket to the surface and hoping.

Bearing capacity and the awkward cases

Prescriptive deck framing assumes soil that can carry a reasonable load. Where the ground in place cannot, footings get larger or an engineer gets involved. That is uncommon on flat Meridian subdivision ground and more likely on filled lots, on the foothill slopes above Boise and Eagle, and near the old irrigation channels that run through this valley.

The other trigger is concentrated load. A hot tub full of water with people in it is a different order of loading from people and furniture spread across a floor, and it lands on a small footprint rather than across the whole frame. It needs framing and footings designed for it, and it is well outside what prescriptive tables cover.

How this reads in a quote

Three things are worth having in writing: how many footings, what size, and what happens to the price if a hole has to go deeper to reach undisturbed ground. That last one is the interesting one, because it is the only line on a deck quote where the ground gets a vote, and pricing it up front is what stops it becoming a conversation halfway through the dig.

What decides how deep a deck footing goes here?

Two things, and the deeper of them wins. The first is the frost line: the base has to sit below the ground that freezes and thaws through the winter. The second is undisturbed soil, meaning original ground rather than fill placed while the house was being built. Both are settled in the open hole rather than on paper, which is why a footing depth is a finding and not a preference.

Can deck posts sit on precast blocks on the ground?

Not under an attached deck. A block on the surface is bearing inside the layer of ground that moves seasonally, by definition, and it is not bearing on undisturbed soil at depth either. Blocks turn up under quick-build platforms, and they turn up again years later under decks that have developed a noticeable fall away from the house.

What if the ground has been filled or disturbed?

Then the hole keeps going until it reaches material that was never moved, which can be considerably deeper than the frost line alone would require. This is common in newer subdivisions, where the yard was graded during construction and the surface you are standing on was placed there. It is found in the hole, and a hole that has not reached solid ground simply gets dug further.
